Mix, EM to Present Panels at NAMM 2011 NAMM's H.O.T. (Hands-On Training) Zone program on Level 2 of the Anaheim Convention Center will offer a series of free one-hour educational sessions, all of which are designed to help attendees sharpen their skills in numerous facets of music and audio production, and music business.

On Friday, January 14 at 2 p.m., EM will present "Maximum Output From Your Home Studio" in Room 204C as part of the Digital Musician series.

On Saturday, January 15 at 10:30 a.m., Mix will present "Commercial Studios Collaborating With Home-Based Producers" in Room 204A as part of The Studio series.

Plus, be sure to check out "Women Behind the Console: Inside the Process," presented by Making Music Herstory (MMH) on January 14, 2011, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in Room 204A. MMH’s executive producer, Lisa Chamblee-Hampton (Prince, George Duke, Justin Timberlake), will moderate the panel, which includes Brenda Russell (The Color Purple, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige); Sylvia Massy (Red Hot Chili Peppers, R.E.M., Prince); Ann Mincieli (Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Usher); Marcella Araica (Timbaland, Keri Hilson, Britney Spears); and Jeri Palumbo (NFL, CBS, Fox). These top producers and engineers will discuss the engineering, production or songwriting process behind their favorite projects and share their techniques, gear interests, and client interaction.

If you are unable to attend this discussion at NAMM, you will be able to watch the live UStream broadcast at any time.

Mackie TH-12A Powered Loudspeaker

Mackie expands its popular Thump Series with the TH-12A ($389 MSRP), a powered, two-way, 12-inch Thump Series loudspeaker. Onboard Fast Recovery™ Class-D amplification provides 400W of total system power to the 12-inch woofer and 1-inch compression driver. A rear panel 3-band EQ lets users adjust for simple room correction or system tone. The active crossover includes transducer alignment, while protective circuitry prevents overload and thermal shutdown. The pole-mountable enclosure can also double as a stage monitor.

Lehmann Audio Studio Cube Headphone Amp
Lehmann Audio’s Studio Cube ($499) headphone amp is compact, stand- (optional) or deskmount, and linkable for daisy-chaining multiple units. I/O is on Neutrik ¼-inch TRS headphone outputs and Neutrik XLR/TRS stereo input/thrus. Features include mono/stereo input selector switches; front panel LEDs monitor input signal presence and overload. The output is Class-A, and all units are crafted with selected components in Germany.

Universal Audio Studer A800 UAD-2 Plug-Ins
Users on Mac and PC can now purchase Universal Audio’s Studer A800 Multichannel Tape Recorder ($349) plug-in for the UAD-2 platform. Modeled by UA with help from AES magnetic recording expert Jay McKnight, the plug-in faithfully models the entire tape path including input, sync and repro paths and circuit electronics of the hardware, plus the sounds of four distinct tape formulas and calibration levels.

McDSP V. 5 Plug-Ins
Now shipping, McDSP V. 5 includes AU support, the new 6030 Ultimate Compressor plug-in, Classic Pack v5 and Emerald Pack v5. In addition to Pro Tools, McDSP v5 plug-ins now support Logic, Garage Band, Digital Performer, Ableton Live and other AU-compatible DAWs. Supported formats include Mac OS 10.5.x (Leopard) and 10.6.x (Snow Leopard), Mac PowerPC (RTAS only) and Windows. The 6030 Ultimate Compressor (pictured) offers 10 different compressors, some designed completely from the ground up by McDSP, mixed with unique twists on vintage emulations. Prices are $449 HD or $249 Native, or as an upgrade to Emerald Pack V. 5 for $349 HD or $299 Native.

Free Hearing Screening Tests
The House Ear Institute, through its Sound Partners® hearing-conservation program, is carrying out its annual tradition of providing non-profit hearing health outreach services at the 2011 NAMM show. The free hearing screenings for NAMM attendees and distributors will be available at Booth #1292 in Hall E during show hours. Licensed audiologists from the House Ear Institute and House Clinic will counsel participants on their hearing screening results, which are kept strictly confidential. The institute’s outreach staff also will hand out additional hearing health education and literature and be available to answer questions from visitors.  

Meyer Sound Special Presentations
In Demo Room 212B, attendees can check out the company's Constellation acoustic system (with special guest Bob Weir) and the MINA line array loudspeaker. Demo schedule includes: January 13-15, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.; January 16, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Bob Weir will show up on January 13 at 4 p.m. and on January 14 at 2 p.m.
