Veteran news anchor Tawny Little will MC the House Ear Institute's 26th Annual Benefit Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel's International Ballroom on March 18, 2004, an event that raises funds for important hearing health research and children's programs at the House Ear Institute (HEI). It will begin at 5 p.m., with the "Hollywood Auction for Hearing Health" at 5:30 p.m. and a reception at 6:30 p.m.; dinner and the evening's program will begin at 7:30 p.m. The institute will recognize philanthropist Robert H. Ahmanson as Humanitarian of the Year for his support of HEI research programs through The Ahmanson Foundation. A separate award will go to Hillel Resner, president of the Mix Foundation, who will receive the House Ear Institute's "Sound Partners Lifetime Achievement Award for Recording Arts" for his support of the institute's Sound Partners hearing conservation program. hei.org

Disc Makers is kicking off the latest installment of its Independent Music World Series (IMWS). The Midwest showcase finals will be held in Chicago at the Elbo Room on May 13, 2004, and will feature the top six acts as selected by Billboard magazine performing for $35,000 in music gear and prizes. Bands and artists can log onto discmakers.com/imws to register and find out more information about the IMWS. The competition is open to all musicians not currently signed to a major record label and to all styles and genres of music. To be eligible, at least one bandmember must reside in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North or South Dakotas, Oklahoma or Wisconsin. Submissions must be postmarked by March 11, 2004.
Entries for the 2004 USA Songwriting Competition are currently being accepted until May 28, 2004. Winning songs will receive airplay on nationally syndicated radio program ""Acoustic Café" and XM Radio, as well as $50,000 worth in cash, merchandise and exposure.
