EPA Issues Compliance Orders

The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers reports that U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 announced early last week that it has issued administrative compliance orders to four concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in Iowa, as well as three others in Kansas and Nebraska. The Region 7 office is located in Kansas City and has jurisdiction in Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska.

Manitoba Premier’s Plans Impact Province’s Pork Producers

Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger put pork producers at the top of his list last week when announcing causes and solutions to a phosphorus problem in Lake Winnipeg. The premier unveiled a plan to save the lake following release of a report indicating the lake is at risk. Results of a five-year study in the province have led to recommendations seeking a 50% reduction in phosphorus levels to reverse regular algae bloom and return the lake to a pre-1990 state.

Composting Offers Manure Storage Alternative

Composting is a possible solution to the manure storage problems some producers are experiencing this year after a long winter and weather-related spreading dilemmas this spring, according to Chris Augustin, nutrient management specialist at North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center.

Chinese Bio-Energy Expo Shows World-Wide Interest in Biogas

The second annual Chinese trade exhibition for Biogas Technology and Management, held last month in Quingdao, China, revealed growing interest in the topic of biogas production throughout the world. Bio-Energy Expo is an integrated event within the larger China Animal Husbandry Exhibition (CAHE) covering five halls or 70,000 square meters (753,480 sq. ft.).

World Pork Expo Seminar Explains Manure Digesters

Manure digester systems get a lot of publicity, but do they really work in the pork industry? A seminar entitled, “Got Manure? Want Energy? Explore Anaerobic Digestion,” will be held on June 9 at World Pork Expo on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines at 9:30 a.m. Hear about currently operating systems and find out what considerations need to be made when looking at a digester project. Mono-Slope Beef Barn Air Emissions Tour Planned

A Mono-Slope Beef Barn Open House and Air Emissions Tour will be held in Royal, IA, on June 22. Iowa State University, in cooperation with the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department at South Dakota State University and the USDA Meat Animal Research Center at Clay Center, NE, are hosting the open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will highlight the ongoing research that is collecting baseline data regarding gas and dust emissions from mono-slope barns. Mortality Management via Anaerobic Digestion

The 2011 Michigan Ag Expo will feature information about the tools and techniques available to improve mortality management practices through a series of presentations, tours and demonstrations on July 19 to 21 in East Lansing, MI.

A July 19 demonstration of carcass reduction will show how to prepare carcasses for possible anaerobic digestion. Kevin Kirk, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, will discuss new anaerobic digestion rules for Michigan and best management practices for an anaerobic digestion system on July 20.

North American Manure Expo in Nebraska

The 2011 North American Manure Expo will be held July 20 at the Northeast Community College Ag Complex near Norfolk, NE. The event features approximately 50 exhibitors from throughout the United States and Canada, displaying and demonstrating manure handling equipment and technology. The event includes educational sessions and commercial field demonstrations.
