New Mexico has been selected by USDA as one of three pilot states to participate in building 150-200 anaerobic digesters, according to USDA reports. The goal is to construct the digesters over a four-year period through USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCSS).

Livestock organizations are working together to submit comments pertaining to the proposed new rule referred to as the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) 308 rule. The rule has been proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to require CAFOs to report information about their operations under Section 308 of the Clean Water Act, which deals with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Comments on the rule are due Dec. 20.

Canada's Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) has funded several multi-year studies examining how the nutrients in distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) impact manure, according to Ethanol Producer magazine. The research indicates that increased phosphorous and nitrogen levels will require feedlots to spread the manure over greater land base to avoid negatively impacting soil quality.

The U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) proposed on-farm child labor regulations have been getting a lot of attention in agricultural circles lately. Under the proposed rules, youth under the age of 16 would be prohibited from performing work, which the Labor Secretary defines as "hazardous," on farms that are not owned by the child's parents. Young people would be prohibited from working near or in manure storage areas under the proposed regulations.

The Department of the Interior recently released the first in a series of regional studies measuring the amount of carbon stored in U.S. ecosystems. Published by Interior's U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the study examines the current and projected future carbon storage in the Great Plains region as part of a nationwide assessment.

A list of 2012 Manure Applicator Certification Training dates is available for Iowa livestock producers and manure management professionals. Producers with more than 500 animal units in confinement must meet manure applicator certification requirements to land-apply manure coming from these facilities in Iowa, according to the Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG).
